Photographing the border: the landscape behind the politics
Photographer Mark Klett, Regents' Professor of Art in the ASU School of Art, in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, has spent decades capturing the desert regions of the Southwestern United States.
His recent series of images “Camino del Diablo,” or "Road of the Devil" (on view in New York, in an exhibition at Pace/MacGill Gallery), details the historic path that runs through a part of the Arizona desert into California.
In conversation with John Guida of The New York Times, Klett talks about how he was drawn to that particular area by a book, and about finding “the collision of history, beauty and terror” in the landscape.
