Professor: Weight loss is not final obesity solution

January 20, 2012

In a recent National Public Radio news report, ASU's Glenn A. Gaesser, a professor in the School of Nutrition and Health Promotion and director of Healthy Lifestyles Research Center, commented on the nation's obesity epidemic which appears to have hit a plateau.

After soaring rates of obesity in the United States during the 1980s and 1990s, the current plateau is proof that obesity is now a national priority. But some warn that weight loss is just one part of the issue.

"Most people who lose weight will ultimately regain it," Gaesser said. "If you do this do over and over and over again you develop a nation of weight-cyclers … and there are risks associated with yo-yo dieting."
