Frank Kush, his players, staff to be honored at Homecoming Legends Luncheon
He led the helm of the Arizona State football program for more than two decades and during that time the institution became a university and moved from the Western Athletic Conference to the Pacific-10 Conference. Now, the Arizona State University Alumni Association and the Sun Devil Club will honor former ASU head football coach Frank Kush and the 1958-1979 teams at the Legends Luncheon from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Oct. 28, at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel.
ASU legends attending the event and who played Sun Devil football in the 1950s include Ron Erhardt, Bob Minitti, and Bobby Mulgado; players from the 1960s include Lt. Gen. (Ret.) John Goodman, Darrell Hoover, Jim Kane, Ron Pritchard, Jim Shaughnesy, and Joe Spagnola, also known as Spaghetti Joe,; and players from the 1970s include Steve Holden, Dan Kush, Steve Matlock, and Danny White. Emceed by Tim Healey, the radio play-by-play voice of Arizona State football, the event will highlight Coach Kush’s accomplishments and his contributions to ASU athletics and the community.
Kush has left a legendary mark on football with 128 ASU football student-athletes drafted by teams in the National, American and World Football Leagues. Kush-coached players have 17 combined NFL Pro Bowl appearances, 10 players were first-round NFL and AFL draft selections, and 22 players from this era in Sun Devil football have been inducted into the Arizona State University Sports Hall of Fame.
The event will feature video highlights and stories from former players about the legendary coach Frank Kush, who led the Sun Devils to nine conference titles and went 6-1 in bowl games. Coach Kush had two undefeated teams and was named the 1975 National Coach of the Year. He also was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1995, and the Sun Devil Stadium football field was named after him in 1996. The event is 50 percent sold out, and tickets can be purchased while supplies last on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets for ASU Alumni Association and Sun Devil Club members are $55, or $550 for a table of 10. Nonmember tickets are $60, or $600 for a table of 10.
