ASU ranked in top 100 world universities

ASU has been ranked as one of the top 100 universities in the world by the Institute of Higher Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU).

ASU is placed at No. 100 in SJTU's annual “Academic Rankings of World Universities.” ASU, which has made steady progress since first entering the rankings, moved from the top 150-200 universities in 2003, to the top 100-150 universities in 2004 and 2005, to its present ranking in the top 100.

“This recognition indicates that ASU is being recognized as a player in the competitive global market of higher education,” says ASU President Michael Crow. “We are proud to be named among the finest institutions in the world. Our research, teaching and service have global implications, and this latest acknowledgement is testament to our faculty and staff who excel as part of an international community of scholars.”

SJTU's Institute of Higher Education ranks research universities in the world by their academic and research performance. It weighs several factors, including:

• Alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Field Medals.

• Highly cited researchers.

• Articles published in Nature and Science.

• Articles indexed in major citation indices.

• The per capita academic performance of an institution.

According to the university, its purpose of compiling the ranking is to “find out the gap between Chinese universities and world-class universities,” particularly in terms of academic and research performance.

Among the top universities, Harvard University is ranked first and the University of Cambridge, England, is ranked second.
