ASU education dean discusses teacher shortage

August 12, 2015

Mari Koerner, dean of the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University, discussed the national shortage of teachers on NPR’s “On Point with Tom Ashbrook.” Koerner joined Russ Brenneman, assistant editor at Education Week, and Paul Bruno, advisor for Deans for Impact.

Koerner talked about the systemic challenges that U.S. schools face in attracting and retaining effective teachers.

“We have to really look at the teaching profession and raise the status of teaching,” Koerner said.

Koerner believes the solution lies in a combination of more effective teacher preparation as well as a broader societal commitment to supporting education.
