In an effort to improve visibility, the Arizona State University Police Department has added four new police vehicles with a new identification to its fleet. Two new black-and-white Ford Taurus models and two Ford Explorers replace older department vehicles.

“University police vehicles are better recognized when they are black-and-white,” said ASU Police Chief Michael Thompson. “We are very excited to add these vehicles to our fleet and believe the new color scheme will make our officers more visible to the ASU community.”

The ASU Police Department works extensively with other agencies who have black-and-white fleet vehicles, including Tempe Police, Gilbert Police and Mesa Police.

Thompson says the vehicles have new computers and state-of-the-art dash cameras. The new fleet will be used in a variety of locations on various days, but likely will be seen in Tempe the most.

The traditional white police vehicles with gold and maroon writing will continue to patrol all campuses, but slowly will be phased out.

Besides SUVs and sedans, ASU police use motorcycles, Segways, Piaggios and bicycles to patrol all four campuses.
