American Sign Language workshop open to ASU faculty, staff

Have you ever wanted to learn sign language, but never had the chance?

The American Sign Language (ASL) faculty in the Department of Speech and Hearing Science invite Arizona State University faculty and staff to the ASL in Higher Ed workshop.

This workshop is for those interested in gaining a better understanding of the challenges and language of deaf and hard-of-hearing students.The goal is to provide staff and faculty the tools to enable deaf and hard-of-hearing student success across disciplines.This workshop is introductory, no prior experience with sign language is necessary.


The workship will take place from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., June 22, at the Stauffer Communication Arts building (A Wing), on the Tempe campus.

Be prepared for complete immersion in deaf language, as no voices are permitted. This is a fun, comfortable zone, with no grade at the end – just a better understanding of deaf culture and casual conversation in ASL.

The workshop instructor, Robin O’Brien, is a full-time lecturer in American Sign Language at ASU. She received her master's in sign lnguage teaching from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. She has taught ASL and deaf culture for the past 25 years at local community colleges and universities in both Arizona and Massachusets. She is also the director of ASL AZTI, Arizona’s first Total Immersion program.
