March 09, 2015

The Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University continues to rise in rankings of the nation’s top education graduate programs, climbing to No. 17.

The 2016 U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools rankings, released today, listed ASU’s Teachers College as 17th among 246 public and private graduate education programs reviewed nationwide, tying with University of California–Berkeley and the University of Kansas for the No. 17 spot.

“We at ASU are happy that our excellence and national standing are recognized in the U.S. News & World Report," said Mari Koerner, dean of Teachers College. "As evidence, we are tied for 9th best public university graduate program with the University of California at Berkeley, which has clearly become a peer institution.”

The ranking also shows Teachers College coming in first among graduate education programs in Arizona.

Of the 123 graduate schools in the rankings, Teachers College serves the third-highest number of graduate students, with 2,428 enrollment in 2014. Although not included in these rankings, the college has an undergraduate enrollment of almost 3,000 students.

“The high number of students in our graduate programs is a testament to the caliber of our programs within Teachers College, as well as the over-arching dedication of the entire ASU community to leading-edge research and innovation that has significant impact in the community while fostering excellence at the individual level,” said Sherman Dorn, division director for graduate studies.

As a leader in cultivating transformative school leaders in the nation’s PreK-12 schools, Teachers College has added three new master's programs that focus on preparing educators with the updated expertise and skills needed to excel in today’s teaching and learning environment. Teachers College now provides 17 master’s degree programs, including the three newest offerings: The Master of Arts in Educational Policy, Master of Arts in Learning Sciences and Master of Education in Educational Leadership.

Teachers College offers six master's degrees online, and for the second year in a row ranked in the top 25 among online graduate education programs, according to the 2015 U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Online Programs” rankings.

Now, the college is preparing to make available online the Doctor of Education in Leadership and Innovation, an innovative program that focuses on research in action for teacher-leaders and education professionals working to implement change in their local place of practice.

“Offering this degree online opens the door for distinguished school leaders to implement innovative applied research that has real impact in the communities where they work,” said Audrey Amrein-Bearsley, associate professor in the college.
