Carillon composition contest now open to ASU students

The Arizoan State University Carillon Society has opened its second annual Carillon Composition Competition and invites ASU students to submit new works for ASU's Symphonic Carillon.

The competition has been renamed the Robert X. La Pat Composition Competition in honor of Scottsdale composer Robert X. La Pat, who wrote the first works for the carillon after it was restored to use in 2005.

Entries are due March 15. The prize is a $250 cash award, underwritten by Kenneth and Laurie Polasko of Scottsdale, and the debut performance of the award-winning work at a carillon concert.

Robert X. La Pat received his bachelor of music degree in composition from the New England Conservatory of Music and his master of music degree in composition from Boston University. He was a winner in the Composer's Guild Composition Competition in 2012. In 2013 he produced five albums for the Extended Horizons label of midi realizations of selected compositions.

The Symphonic Carillon was a gift from Associated Students to the university in 1966. It is a memorial to those in the ASU community who gave their lives for their country. For more information about the carillon go to www.asu.edu/carillon.
