ASU faculty, staff take the plunge for United Way

As part of the 2014 ASU Homecoming FestDevil activities on the Downtown Phoenix campus, Oct. 30, the College of Letters and Sciences organized a “Dunk Your Professor” event to raise funds for ASU’s United Way campaign.

All five Downtown Phoenix campus academic deans – Duane Roen (College of Letters and Sciences), Jonathan Koppell (College of Public Programs), Chris Callahan (Cronkite School of Journalism), Teri Pipe (College of Nursing and Health Innovation) and Keith Lindor (College of Health Solutions) – rallied around the cause, enduring a shift in the dunk tank.

They were joined by brave staff and faculty members Casey Self, Jason Houtchens, Cayle Lisenbee, David Wells and James Wermers from the College of Letters and Sciences; Brian Snyder from the Cronkite School; and ASU Police commander Christopher Speranza.

Dressed in everything from wet suits and snorkeling gear to pool floaties and ASU-wear, the crew together raised nearly a thousand dollars for Valley of the Sun United Way – their colleagues and students lining up, in some cases, for a chance to see them plunge.

“The event showed how much camaraderie there is among the Downtown Phoenix campus units,” said Roen about the four-hour event. “It was a great opportunity for students, faculty, staff and families to engage in a spirited activity together in support of our community.”
