October 14, 2014

A fire show, aerialist and free kettle corn will be among the many delights at the West campus Homecoming celebration, Oct. 29, when Arizona State University hosts Sparky's Big Top Carnival and the annual Sparky's Challenge 5K/10K run/walk.

Members of the public are invited to join in the fun at West, as student organizations and campus partners come together to host carnival booths and offer free food.

The carnival, set to take place from 6 to 9 p.m., will be preceded by the 10K run/walk, which is set to begin at 4:45 p.m., and the 5K run/walk at 5:30 p.m. Check-in starts at 3:45 for both of these family-friendly events, designed for people of all ages and ability levels.

Sparky’s Challenge participants are asked to bring donations for local charities to help those in need. All items are welcome.

“Students at West have put in a lot of work planning a fun evening for members of the ASU community and Valley residents, and we invite the public to come out and join us for an enjoyable part of Homecoming week,” said David Anaya, coordinator in the Office of Student Engagement at the West campus.

Registration for the Sparky’s Challenge is free to members of the ASU community and $10 for the general public. All participants will receive a free T-shirt, and the top finishers will earn a medal. Registration may be completed in person at the Sun Devil Fitness Complex on any ASU campus or by calling 480-727-7802.

The carnival takes place outdoors on Las Casas Lawn, adjacent to the student housing complex, dining facility and fitness complex on the West campus, 4701 W. Thunderbird Road in Phoenix.

Free parking will be available for Sparky’s Big Top Carnival and Sparky’s Challenge; attendees should enter campus at the 47th Ave. entrance from Thunderbird Road. For more information, call 602-543-5300.

The week’s activities culminate in Tempe on Nov. 1, with the traditional Homecoming parade, block party and football game against the University of Utah.
