ASU stuns USC, 38-34, with Hail Mary By Emma Greguska | October 08, 2014 Coach Todd Graham proudly leads the Sun Devils onto the field Oct. 4 in Los Angeles to take on the University of Southern California Trojans. Plenty of ASU fans traveled west to show their support, displaying their tell-tale gold gear and pitchforks as they cheered on their team. Freshman linebacker DJ Calhoun thrusts his pitchfork high, showing the crowd he's ready to rumble. Junior wide receiver Jaelen Strong's notable catching ability foreshadows the game's outcome early on. Sparky worked his biceps hard with a round of push-ups for every touchdown, all the while sporting pink gloves in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. With 23 seconds and no timeouts remaining, the stadium collectively held its breath as quarterback Mike Bercovici winds up for a Hail Mary. Astonishingly, Strong leapt into the air, seizing the ball, planting his feet in the end zone and securing the win for ASU. The catch was Strong’s 10th of the evening as he finished with 202 yards and three touchdowns, setting a career high in the latter two categories. Even Sparky joined in as the Sun Devils erupted in celebration of their 38-34 win over No. 16 USC. Strong's performance in the game marked the first time a Sun Devil receiver eclipsed 200 receiving yards in since Shaun McDonald had 204 against Oregon in 2002, and just the eighth time in ASU history a receiver has gone over 200 yards. Strong and senior associate athletic director Jean Boyd embrace in victory.
