United Way campaign calls ASU community to action
Every year, the fall semester at Arizona State University marks the beginning of the United Way fundraising campaign.
United Way is a national system of volunteers, contributors and local charities helping people in their own communities. Valley of the Sun United Way has served the needs of individuals and families in Maricopa County since 1925.
With the launch of the 2014 ASU United Way campaign, ASU President Michael Crow is challenging faculty, staff, ASU retirees, emeriti and the ASU Foundation to answer the call and demonstrate their generosity to achieve a combined goal of $700,000.
Throughout the fall semester, as a token of appreciation, those who pledge their donation before certain dates (to be announced) will be entered in a drawing to receive a prize and be featured in ASU Insight. This week’s winners are Dulce Martinez, who received a signed football, and Louise Nemanich, who received two tickets in the Engineering Box for the blackout football game against the UCLA Bruins. (Read below for a brief Q&A with the winners.)
All who give to United Way will be offered tickets to a non-conference men's or women’s basketball game.
The next drawing will be for those who pledge by Oct. 2, and those prizes include: a basketball signed by the ASU Men’s Basketball team for donations at or greater than $100 ($1.93 per week), and the opportunity to guest coach for the ASU versus Stanford football game on Oct. 18 for donations at or greater than $1,000 ($19.24 per week). Winners will be drawn Oct. 3 and notified soon after; they will be featured in the following week’s edition of ASU Insight, Oct. 10.

Dulce Martinez
Q:What do you do at ASU?
A: I began working for ASU in March of this year as the office specialist for the Disability Resource Center on the Tempe Campus.
Q: Why do you donate to United Way?
A: As part of a community, I find it to be my responsibility to help others who are in need.
Q: What do you hope for United Way to accomplish?
A: I know there are many ways that United Way gives back to our community; the one that touches my heart closely is helping those young children who suffer with hunger on a daily basis.
Q: What is something everyone should know about the United Way campaign?
A: ASU will be hosting the World Record to End Hunger event on Oct. 25, benefiting Valley of the Sun United Way. This event will not only be fun, but will help feed children in need.

Q: What do you do at ASU?
A: I am an associate clinical professor of strategic management at the W. P. Carey School of Business. I have been at the university since August of 2006.
Q: Why do you donate to United Way?
A: I have been donating a portion of my salary to the United Way since I started working in 1976. I believe that those of us fortunate enough to hold good jobs have an obligation to help others in the community who are less fortunate.
Q: What do you hope for United Way to accomplish?
A: I would like to see the United Way continue its efforts to provide resources to those in our community who need a bit of help dealing with everyday challenges, be it health, hunger, homelessness or literacy.
Q: What is something everyone should know about the United Way campaign?
A: The United Way campaign is a great vehicle for donations to support the community because they provide funding to local agencies very efficiently, by using hundreds of volunteers, and because they provide more help than just money – many volunteers from businesses in our community audit the agencies and provide advice on managing their funding.
