ASU President Michael M. Crow will host a dedication ceremony to celebrate a major capital renovation and expansion of the ASU Preparatory Academy Polytechnic Elementary School at 4 p.m. on Sept. 9. The school is located at 6950 E. Williams Field Road, Mesa, Arizona (Williams Field and Power Roads).

The new expansion allows ASU Preparatory Academy to serve more families in the East Valley, with several additional classrooms for grades PreK-6 enabling the school to enroll 235 more students.

To date, two phases of a three-phase project have been completed. Phase three will be completed by the summer of 2015, which will allow the school to accommodate and expand to PreK-8.

Upon completion, the renovation project will have converted 65,000 square feet of an existing Veteran’s Medical Clinic on ASU’s Polytechnic Campus into a dynamic, progressive educational environment with cutting-edge technology and progressive school design that enables personalized learning, as well as group learning experiences. The renovation is an environmentally responsible project representative of the commitment, goals and teaching style of the ASU Preparatory Academy.

Architects involved in the project include Weddle Gilmore and DLR Group. The construction managers included CORE Construction and Hardison/Downey Construction Inc. Weddle Gilmore and CORE Construction also donated design and construction services to build a playground tree-house valued at $60,000 for ASU Prep students.

Claudia Mendoza, principal of the elementary school, said she and other school administrators are excited about the additional classroom space and the learning opportunities it offers to more students.

“ASU Preparatory Academy Polytechnic Elementary prides itself on providing a highly rigorous and innovative approach to project-based learning,” Mendoza said. “We strive to cultivate a community of critical thinkers, and our new space allows us to provide STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) classes, music, foreign language and physical education for all our learners in a beautiful environment that fosters creativity, cooperation and teaming between teachers and students.”
