President Crow to speak on access, excellence at Clemson convocation

July 29, 2014

ASU President Michael M. Crow is set to speak at the Aug. 19 Victor Hurst Convocation ceremony at Clemson University.

The South Carolina public research university has invited Crow, “the architect of an alternative model (of higher education) that he calls the ‘New American University,’” to speak on his experience in building a university with the reputation for “making higher education accessible to a broad demographic without sacrificing academic excellence.”

Under Crow’s leadership, Arizona State University has established more than a dozen new transdisciplinary schools and large-scale research initiatives, and its research dollars have more than quadrupled – from about $100 million to more than $420 million.

“Our central objective was to build a university that was needed, rather than try to replicate some university that already existed before us,” said Crow.

“President Crow’s vision can serve as a road map as Clemson tackles the grand challenges of the 21st century,” said Anand Gramopadhye, the dean of the College of Engineering and Science at Clemson.
