Member spotlight by AAAS features ASU biology professor

Regents’ Professor Jane Maienschein was recently featured in an article from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) about her journey through life and the research she conducts as director of Arizona State University’s Center for Biology and Society.

The member spotlight chronicles the beginning of Maienschein’s journey from Oakridge, Tenn., to her eventual arrival in Tempe, Ariz. It touches on her time spent as a fellow with the 105th Congress during the first attempt to ban genetic cloning, and how the misinformation on the subject drove her to push for more science-oriented communication. Maienschein says in the article that this trend of anti-intellectualism is frustrating and has persisted even in today’s scientifically advanced society.

At ASU, Maienschein researches embryology, genetics and cell biology in addition to examining the social, political and legal contexts of science. She is also a President’s Professor, Parent’s Association Professor and faculty leader within the School of Life Sciences.
