Events at ASU to commemorate civil rights leader Cesar Chavez

The School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies at Arizona State University will host three events commemorating civil rights leader Cesar Chavez.

The first features Miriam Pawel, ASU professor and author of “The Crusades of Cesar Chavez,” and professor Matthew Garcia, author of “From the Jaws of Victory: The Triumph and Tragedy of Cesar Chavez and the Farm Worker Movement.” The duo will discuss the life of the civil rights leader and the movement he inspired at 3 p.m., April 7, in the Education Lecture Hall 117, just north of Gammage Auditorium, on the Tempe campus.

The second is a private gathering at a downtown Phoenix landmark, Santa Rita Hall. The hall was the site of a fast held by Cesar Chavez in the early 1970s. Arizona veterans of the movement will be honored there, including Gilbert Padilla, who was instrumental in helping organize a successful, international grape boycott with Cesar Chavez.

Topping off celebrations at 4:30 p.m., April 8, Paul Espinosa, filmmaker and professor in ASU's School of Transborder Studies, will moderate a discussion of filmmaker Diego Luna’s film, “Cesar Chavez.” Panelists include farm worker movement organizers Gilbert Padilla, Scott Washburn and biographers Miriam Pawel and Matthew Garcia. The screening will be held in ASU’s Memorial Union Pima Auditorium on the Tempe campus.
