Professor contributes to Grove Dictionary of American Music

January 17, 2014

First published in 1878, The Grove Dictionary of American Music is the world's most renowned music dictionary – comprising a 20-volume main series and specialized works on jazz, opera, instrumental music, American music and others.

ASU's Jere Humphreys, a professor of music in the School of Music, within the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, has helped produce the second edition of The Grove Dictionary, published in eight volumes by Oxford University Press last November.

Humphreys served on an 11-member senior editorial board, and also served as the Contributing Editor for Music Education. He selected topics, commissioned authors and oversaw the preparation of almost 350 articles over a seven-year period. He also contributed dozens of short articles himself.

This is the first update of the American Grove since the four-volume first edition came out in 1986. Its contents are being added to a unified index called Oxford Music Online/Grove Music Online.

As a Fulbright Scholar and award-winning researcher, Humphreys has contributed as an author and editor to dozens of books and journals internationally. He says this was one of the most rewarding projects of his career.
