ASU named to 'Best for Vets' list
Arizona State University has been named to Military Times’ “Best for Vets: College 2014” list for the fourth consecutive year. The distinction recognizes and rewards colleges across the nation that demonstrate a commitment to providing opportunities to America’s veterans.
The organization comprising Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times and Marine Corps Times placed a new emphasis on academic rigor this year when conducting and scoring the annual Best for Vets: Colleges survey. The rankings factored in service member enrollment, percentage of tuition covered by the GI Bill and availability of specific programs to help service members.
The extensive evaluation process also factored in statistics commonly used to track student success and academic quality, including student loan default rates, retention rates, graduation rates and student-faculty ratio.
ASU remains firmly committed to helping veterans succeed in reaching their academic goals. Each year it has been evident that the survey questions have been adjusted and that the expectations for institutions increase. It is great to be part of an institution that shows its commitment to student success, and our student veterans definitely enrich the Sun Devil community.
Earlier this year, ASU was also deemed a “Military Friendly School” by G.I. Jobs magazine for the fifth consecutive year. The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are leaders in providing educational support benefits and paths to success for military veterans.
Additionally, ASU is a partner university with the Pat Tillman Foundation in support of the Tillman Military Scholars program, which provides scholarships for active and veteran service members as well as their spouses. This year, Jason Turner and Efraim Ruthenberg were selected to represent Sun Devils everywhere in the 2013-2014 cohort. The Tillman Military Scholars program covers not only direct study-related expenses such as tuition and fees, but also other needs, including housing and childcare.
