Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year aims for top-10 finish at track nationals

November 18, 2013

AZCentral featured Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year for 2013 Shelby Houlihan in a recent sports briefing.

Houlihan has set her sights on a top-10 finish at the NCAA Track Championships, Nov. 23, in Terre Haute, Ind. The only other Sun Devil to accomplish that was Lisa Aguilera, finishing fifth in 2000.

When she arrived at ASU, she wasn’t sure how well she would compete in the first cross-country race of her junior year. “I could have run harder, but I didn’t need to,” said Houlihan. She finished in first place, 13 seconds ahead of UA’s Elvin Kibet.

“My fitness is beyond what it has ever been, so I’m pretty excited to see what I can do later on in the season,” she says.

ASU women’s XC coach Ryan Cole is optimistic about the high-profile recruit from Sioux City, Iowa.

“If Shelby is able to stay excited and engaged in the process over the next eight weeks, she can have a special result (at nationals). … Top 10 is well within the realm of possibility,” he said.

The news site also mentioned Devin Marshall’s value to the ASU soccer team, which was evident after a 1-0 loss at Oregon State.
