ASU selected to host Clinton Global Initiative University international meeting in 2014

At the closing of the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting in New York, Chelsea Clinton announced that Arizona State University will serve as the host of the next Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) meeting, which will take place March 21-23, 2014.

The CGI U brings together college students to address global challenges with practical, innovative solutions. Participants do more than simply discuss problems – they take concrete steps to solve them by creating action plans, building relationships, participating in hands-on workshops and following up with CGI U as they complete their projects.

Building on the successful model of the Clinton Global Initiative, which brings together world leaders to take action on global challenges, President Bill Clinton launched CGI U in 2007. Previous meetings have taken place at Tulane University, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Miami, the University of California at San Diego, George Washington University and Washington University in St. Louis, and have convened more than 5,500 students from 135 countries, more than 800 schools and all 50 states.

“Arizona State University is proud to serve as the host of the 2014 Clinton Global Initiative University and we welcome students from all over the world,” ASU President Michael M. Crow said.

“Running through the veins of our institution is a passionate desire to develop solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges. We share President Clinton’s vision for this and, in fact, the areas of focus for CGI U are areas in which ASU faculty and students are deeply invested.”

The meeting at ASU will bring together nearly 1,200 attendees to make a difference in CGI U’s five focus areas: education, environment and climate change, peace and human rights, poverty alleviation and public health.

ASU undergraduate and graduate students will be able to directly participate in CGI U and there will be additional volunteer opportunities during the meeting.
