Riley named associate vice president of University Business Services

John Riley is the new associate vice president of University Business Services and the university sustainability operations officer at Arizona State University. Riley has been filling both positions on an interim basis since Ray Jensen’s March 2013 retirement.

During his 25 years at ASU, Riley has served in many different roles. He most recently held the position of Executive Director for Purchasing and Business Services and University Chief Procurement Officer.

Morgan R. Olsen, ASU’s executive vice president, treasurer and chief financial officer, is enthusiastic about Riley’s new role.

“John’s deep knowledge of ASU underpins his commitment to the continual improvement of business services," Olsen says. "His leadership and strong commitment to moving ASU toward our sustainability goals make him a major asset to the Business and Finance team.”

Riley’s new responsibilities include the coordination and advancement of the university’s sustainability operations practices. As associate vice president of University Business Services, he oversees most business operations and auxiliary business services on ASU’s four campuses, including Parking and Transit Services, Trademark Licensing, Document Management, Procurement Services, Materials Management, Sun Devil Campus Stores, Sun Devil Card Services and other units.

Riley’s career achievements have been recognized on a national scale. In April 2012, Riley received the Bert C. Ahrens Achievement Award from the National Association of Educational Procurement. The award recognizes his outstanding service to the procurement profession in higher education. The Ahrens Award is the association’s highest honor.

“I am pleased to have the opportunity to work with such an outstanding group of dedicated professionals,” Riley said. “Together, we will deliver exciting sustainability initiatives, such as powering our Central Plant with biogas or generating electricity from biomass.”

Prior to his time at ASU, Riley earned his undergraduate degree in 1967 from Rutgers University and his master’s in 1978 from Troy University in Alabama. He also was a member of the Air Force and served as Deputy Base Commander at Williams Air Force Base in Mesa, Ariz.
