ASU's Week in Pictures By Juno Schaser | January 24, 2013 The College of Technology and Innovation held their Second Annual Car Show at the mall in front of the Citrus Dining Facility, as part of the "Thing on Thursday" series on ASU's Polytechnic campus. Hot rods, customs, sports cars and sedans – as well as manufacturers' test cars – were on display. ASU student Megan Best, who is highly involved with different research projects in the School of Life Sciences, has been selected to read one her papers at Harvard. The return of warm weather to the Phoenix area brought trumpet performance major Tyler Richardson out of the Music Building and under the rotunda to practice. Josh Chavez and Matthew Nevarez, both members of Episilon Sigma Rho fraternity, clean classrooms at the Telos Academy in Phoenix as part of ASU's 2013 MLK Day of Service. Along with academy, volunteers also helped out at the Sojourner Center and the Tiger Mountain Foundation as part of the Day of Service. Chinny Onoura (foreground), a member of the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, and ASU student Margarita Lopez began to freshen up the hallways of the Telos Academy, which is located on the grounds of Pilgrim Rest church. Other projects at the academy included covering chairs with protective plastic. Annie Cairns, with Kappa Alpha Theta, and her brother, Thomas Cairns, a high school student, joined church member B.J. Hackett in the labor. The 27th Annual Martin Luther King Breakfast was held this year on ASU's Polytechnic campus. ASU's School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies brought author, journalist and food policy expert Raj Patel to campus Jan. 22, to hold a discourse on Food Justice. Zoia Manolescu, director of the Department of Foreign Languages and Communication at the Technical University of Civil Engineering in Bucharest, Romania discussed "'Filtering' Anglicisms in Contemporary Romanian: The Mediating Alterite of Linguistic Integration" (how English terms enter the Romanian Language) as part of the Romanian Program in the School of International Letters and Cultures. Eric Liu, the performer of the one-man show, "Citizen Who," leads the audience through the lives of several Americans – including his own – as he contemplates what it means to be an American. The show, which took place at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, is a part of the Zócalo Public Square's Phoenix series. Zócalo is a project of ASU's Center for Social Cohesion.
