Why we should care about Isaac Asimov's birthday

January 09, 2013

Who is Isaac Asimov? A biochemist who also happened to love writing stories. As a result, his birthday now marks National Science Fiction Day (Jan. 2).

Ed Finn, founding director of ASU's Center for Science and the Imagination, wrote why this day is of such great importance in Future Tense on Slate. Based on examples of science fiction works written long ago, we are essentially living in the future, he says. "So why not make this the first day of 2013 that you spend living in a science fiction era?" Finn writes.

"Let social media guide you to the incredible things humans are achieving on and off this planet, and then let science fiction and the deep riches of digital culture guide you to some new ideas, some better dreams, and better futures."
