On the 2nd day of giving, help make hunger disappear

December 14, 2012

As Arizona State University gears up to win the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, Dec. 29, in San Francisco, the university is taking the opportunity to offer suggestions for 12 Days of Giving in order to make a big difference this season and celebrate the university’s outreach role in the community.

Day 2
Help make hunger disappear.

The university's student-led ASU4Food is an organization that works with food banks to spread awareness and eliminate hunger in Arizona.

The group finds innovative ways to do their work. For example, over the last several years at ASU's annual Homecoming celebration, ASU4Food has spelled out the word “hunger” in canned goods with one can going away each time someone donates a dollar until the word "hunger" disappears. At the 2012 ASU Homecoming Block Party, ASU4Food spelled out "hunger" via a 30-foot long display of 4,800 soup cans.

Meagan Harrach, the organization's online coordinator, says the group likes to get ASU's various colleges and schools involved in the activities.

"Different colleges on campus have the opportunity to adopt a letter that students in that college can focus on bringing down with donations," Harrach said.

ASU4Food collaborates with community organizations to host events throughout the year. Everything collected by ASU4Food is donated to St. Mary's Food Bank and United Food Bank and is counted towards the Food Fight, a rivalry competition between Arizona State University and the University of Arizona.
