Sutton named to Walter Camp All-America team, becomes Sun Devils' 18th consensus All-American

December 07, 2012

Arizona State University defensive tackle Will Sutton has been selected as a 2012 Walter Camp Football Foundation Second Team All-American, the foundation announced Dec. 6.

Sutton's selection, along with the Sporting News and American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) nods, make him the 15th different Sun Devil in school history to be named a consensus All-American. He is the first since kicker Thomas Weber earned AP, Sporting News and Walter Camp honors in 2007.

There have been 18 seasons in which a Sun Devil has been a consensus All-American, as safeties David Fulcher (1984-85) and Mike Richardson (1981-82), and running back Woody Green (1972-73) were two-time honorees.

The All-America teams selected by the Associated Press (AP), AFCA, Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), Sporting News and Walter Camp Football Foundation are recognized by the NCAA to determine consensus All-Americans.

Sutton recorded 10.5 sacks and 20 tackles for loss, along with three forced fumbles and five pass breakups, despite missing one game and the majority of another due to an injury.

He led the Pac-12 and ranked fifth in the FBS with 1.82 tackles for loss per game, and also ranked 13th in the nation and third in the conference with .95 sacks per game. A force that can line up in multiple spots on the defensive line, he anchored a pass-rush defense that was second in the nation in both sacks (4.0) and tackles for loss per game (8.83).

Sutton, who recorded a tackle for loss in all 11 games he played in and collected multiple TFLs in six of those contests, used constant pressure to guide a Sun Devil defense that led the Pac-12 in both pass defense and pass efficiency defense, as well as rank second in the conference in total defense.

The 2012 Walter Camp Player of the Year and members of the All-America team will be honored at the organization's national awards banquet on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at the Yale University Commons in New Haven. In addition, the Foundation will also recognize former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne and NFL player/coach Herm Edwards.

About the Walter Camp All-America teams
The Walter Camp Football Foundation is the oldest college All-American Football Team.

Walter Camp, The Father of American Football, first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp a former Yale University athlete and football coach is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to 11 men per side.

The Walter Camp Football Foundation a New Haven based all-volunteer group was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All-America team.
