Mayes interviewed on 'Arizona Horizon'

November 20, 2012

Professor Kris Mayes appeared on Eight, Arizona PBS' “Arizona Horizon” Nov. 13 in an interview with Ted Simons to discuss Arizona’s renewable energy standard.

Six years ago, the Arizona Corporation Commission adopted a renewable energy standard that requires public utilities to generate 15 percent of their energy from renewable resources. The commission defined these resources as solar, wind, biomass, biogas, landfill gas or geothermal energy.

Mayes was one of the commissioners who voted for the standard in 2006. She said the aim of the ACC is to reach their goal of 15 percent renewable energy by 2025, but that this percentage is still much lower than some surrounding states. Mayes said Arizona’s potential for solar energy means it could reach its goal much faster, and that she would like to see an even higher standard set for 2025.

Mayes is the faculty director for the ASU Program on Law and Sustainability. In 2003, Janet Napolitano appointed her to the Corporation Commission. Mayes also helped establish one of the most ambitious energy efficiency standards in the nation, requiring utilities to sell 22 percent less energy by 2010 than they would have under current forecasts.
