Mohrman comments on grant-funded American Cultural Centers in China
ASU professor Kathryn Mohrman was quoted in an article written by Elizabeth Redden, titled "U.S. Answer to Confucius Institutes," Nov. 2 in Inside Higher Ed.
The article examines the rising number of State Department-funded "American Cultural Centers" being created by U.S. colleges in partnership with Chinese host universities.
The story discusses a “new phenomenon” in the establishment of American centers with a primary purpose to expose Chinese audiences to the “depth and breadth of U.S. culture.”
ASU received a pilot grant from the American Embassy in Beijing in 2010 for a center at Sichuan University. Mohrman, a professor in the School of Public Affairs within the College of Public Programs, and co-director of the SCU-ASU Center for American Culture, commented on her experiences leading ASU’s center in China.
