More than 12,500 students to move into residence halls Aug. 17-21

ASU Move-In
August 13, 2012

Editor's Note: Fall Sessions A & C begin Aug. 23, and Fall Session B begins Oct. 17.

The lazy days of summer are quickly drawing to a close, as more than 12,500 students prepare to move into the ASU campus residence halls Aug. 17-21 for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Returning students and members of Barrett, the Honors College are scheduled to move into their rooms at the Polytechnic campus on Aug. 17.

Tempe campus check-in is Aug. 18 and 19 in Wells Fargo Arena, with a bevy of volunteers on staff to help give students their room keys, ASU student IDs, parking maps and mailbox keys. Check-in at the Downtown Phoenix and West campuses also will take place at this time.

The West campus has expanded its residential offerings with the freshly completed Casa de Oro – a 365-bed residence hall featuring two-bedroom, suite-style units. Amenities include a social lounge, gaming lounge, study rooms, a community kitchen, laundry facilities and a landscaped interior courtyard. The hall also is designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver specifications.

Freshmen at the Polytechnic campus also will move into the newly built Century Hall – a three-story, 84,000 square-foot building featuring residence wings that aim to create an environment where students live and learn with other students who share the same major. The residence wings also allow students to more easily interact with faculty, and provide them access to academic resources and student services outside of the classroom. Amenities include group study rooms, a small engineering studio, laundry facilities, community kitchen and three activity lounges featuring a pool table, gaming and table tennis.

All students, volunteers and staff are strongly advised to stay hydrated throughout the week. Water stations will be placed at check-in areas on all campuses. While moving into residence halls, it is also a good idea to wear sunglasses, hats and sunscreen to protect skin from the sun.

Once the boxes are unpacked and introductions have been made, students on the Polytechnic campus are encouraged to attend the Sundown, Devils Up! event, featuring music, free food and guaranteed fun with fellow Sun Devils starting at 7 p.m., Aug. 20.

Freshmen and transfer students can start the year off right by attending the Sun Devil Welcome set to take place at 1 p.m., Aug. 21, at Wells Fargo Arena. Newcomers will learn about the resources available at ASU, sing the fight song with Sun Devils and enjoy a variety of performances from on-campus organizations.

The Fall Welcome Concert is set to take place on Aug. 21, and will feature the musical stylings of rapper B.o.B with special guest group Far East Movement. The event is scheduled to take place at Wells Fargo Arena and is open to ASU students who have pre-registered for tickets.

Learn about the 400-plus student organizations available to students during Passport to ASU at 6:30 p.m., Aug. 22, in the Memorial Union and Sun Devil Fitness Complex on the Tempe campus.

All students are encouraged to take part in one of the university’s longest standing traditions: whitewashing the “A" on "A Mountain" to signify the start of the academic year. The fun is set to begin at 9 a.m., Aug. 25.

Downtown students can enjoy a night of live entertainment and games at Sparky’s Carnival, which is set to take place from 6-9 p.m., on Aug. 25, at Civic Space Park. It's an opportunity for students to meet fellow Sun Devils, try tasty treats and win fun prizes.

West campus Sun Devils can kick off the school year right at Sparky’s Welcome Back Carnival from 6-10 p.m., Aug. 25, in the Sun Devil Fitness Complex Fields. Students are invited to celebrate with free food and activities.

Free shuttles will be provided to transport students living on the West, Polytechnic and Downtown Phoenix campuses to the Sun Devil Welcome and Fall Welcome Concert.
