Boyd's leadership key to student-athlete success

Posted: Jun 20, 2012 | 3 min 44 sec

Jean Boyd was recruited to play football at Arizona State University in 1991. After playing for the New England Patriots briefly, Boyd sought out a career in higher education and has never looked back.

ASU's senior associate athletic director for the Office of Student Athlete Development, Boyd says winning on the court, in the pool and on the field is no different than winning in the classroom. His leadership in enhancing the academic caliber of ASU student-athletes recently earned him the 2012 Lan Hewlett Award at the 2012 National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletes Conference.

"I'm in awe of the young people graduating from Arizona State University who have competed at the very highest level in their sport," Boyd says. "They're All-Americans, they're first-round draft picks, they're Olympians – who, at the same time, have embraced education."
