McCormick qualifies for London Olympics

Arizona State junior diver Riley McCormick qualified for the 2012 London Olympics on the men's 10-meter platform, Saturday, at the Canadian Olympic diving trials in Montreal, Canada.

"I'm really excited right now and very, very happy with how things went," McCormick said. "My last dive there was probably the worst one I've done in a few years, but the emotions at that point took over and I knew I had already made it. I could have pretty much just jumped off the platform."

McCormick is making his second-consecutive Olympic appearance, having represented his home country of Canada in the 2008 Beijing games. A two-time Pac-12 Diver of the Year in his first two seasons at Arizona State, McCormick grey shirted the 2011-12 season to focus on Olympic training. In Beijing, McCormick placed 16th overall on the 10-meter platform for Canada, narrowly missing the Olympic finals.

At Arizona State, McCormick won two Pac-12 Championships ('10, '11) on the 10-meter platform, setting a new school record in the event, and finished runner-up at the 2010 NCAA Championships on the 10-meter platform.

McCormick is the fifth diver under head coach Mark Bradshaw to compete in the Olympic games. Former Pac-12 Diver of the Year Micky Benedetti has also qualified to represent Italy.

Also competing at the Canadian Olympic diving trials was incoming freshman Morgan Weller, who finished seventh on the 3-meter springboard. Weller is a four-time Speedo Junior National Championship medalist and took home the silver at the Summer Senior National Championships on the 1-meter springboard.
