ASU women's golf: a decade of champions

Posted: May 21, 2012 | 3 min 03 sec

The fourth-ranked Sun Devil women's golf team is in Franklin, Tenn., this week, making their 21st-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championships – an NCAA record that began in 1990 under the coaching of Linda Vollstedt, who led women's golf at ASU from 1980 to 2001.

Then-ASU senior athlete Missy Farr Kaye, now the associate head coach of the women's golf team, says that 1990 was a very special year, as she and her best friend, who both played on the Sun Devil golf team, had decided 1990 was the year they'd bring home the championship trophy.

"There were three of us who had been there for several years," recalls Farr Kaye. "Our sophomore year we had lost the NCAA Championship by one shot, and that left a really bad taste. I just really thought that once we got to our senior year … if everything fell into place, this was going to be our year. It was such pure joy to finally win."

"I think we raised the bar," she adds. "And then the teams behind me continued on and played amazing."

ASU also holds the NCAA record for total championship appearances with 30. The 1995 ASU women's golf team was the best team ever compiled in collegiate women's golf; the team has yet to be equaled in number of tournaments won and scoring average.
