Joe Lockard received the Faculty Achievement Award at the Feb. 29 annual Founders' Day awards dinner for his work as a public service scholar.

Lockard developed the Prison English Project – a unique initiative that provides opportunities for mutual learning and engagement for ASU English students and prisoners in two regional facilities.

"This university provides genuine friendships, empathy and care," Lockard says. "Without that empathy, intellectual life is empty."
