'Republic' honors Herberger Academy teacher

December 28, 2011

The Arizona Republic recently asked readers to submit stories about teachers who make a positive impact on their students' lives. The newspaper selected three winners, in three categories of grades taught, from among the hundreds of responses it received.

The middle-school honoree is Mike Twilling, a teacher of middle-school curriculum specializing in science at ASU's Gary K. Herberger Young Scholars Academy. The Herberger Academy is an initiative of ASU's Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College.

Twilling's profile was featured in the Republic on Dec. 25.

"It sounds kind of corny, but the best thing about teaching is absolutely the kids," Twilling told the Republic. "I never wake up and say, 'I'm going to work.' I say, 'I'm going to school.'"

"The qualities that make Mike a good teacher are the simple qualities that make him a good man," said Kim Lansdowne, the Herberger Academy's executive director. "He is thoughtful and caring and has earned the respect of the students, parents and his co-workers. Through his love of science, he helps students understand global issues facing them and inspires them to become part of the solution.

"With a teacher like Mr. Twilling, our students can literally change the world. He is the best of the best, and the Herberger Academy is fortunate to have him on staff," Lansdowne said.
