Measuring glucose levels with tears

Posted: Jul 20, 2011 | 3 min 52 sec

According to ASU's Jeffrey LaBelle, there are at least 25 million people in the United States with diabetes. By the year 2030 it is estimated that one in three people in the United States will have diabetes. Students at ASU are seeking new technologies for people with diabetes.

Students in the LaBelle lab of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering are working on a Tear TOUCH Glucose Sensing project to measure glucose levels in tears rather than blood. Finger pricking is currently the common way to measure glucose levels. LaBelle and his team are bringing ease and access to glucose testing that can decrease complications for those with diabetes.
