Regents' Professor: Rachel G. Fuchs

Posted: Feb 23, 2011 | 4 min 10 sec

Rachel G. Fuchs, Regents' Professor in the School of Historical, Philosophical & Religious Studies, is a beloved teacher and mentor who has won many teaching awards and whose students often stay in touch with her for years after graduation. Her pathbreaking investigations of family life in France have made her one of the world’s most eminent social historians of modern France, illuminating the lives of poor women and children through the techniques of social, political and cultural history.

"What I love about history ... is that it allows you to do everything because you can bring in anthropology," Fuchs says. "You can bring in sociology. You can bring in literature. You can bring in psychology. You can bring in a little law. It allows you to do all these things and provide the context to make your story meaningful."
