Men's Golf, Buran shine in final fall season tournament

The men's golf team took fifth place in The Prestige at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif. with a 12-over par 876 (290-298-288), and senior Thomas Buran finished second in the individual standings at 6-under par 210 (68-74-68). Behind Buran's 4-under par 68, the Sun Devils shot their best round of the tournament on the third day, firing an even par 288.

Senior Scott Pinckney ended the event with a 3-over par 219 (75-73-71) after carding a 1-under par 71. Continuing his assault on the leaderboard, he climbed into a tie for 17th with, among others, senior Jesper Kennegard, who recorded a 4-over par 76 on the day and finished at 3-over par 219 (71-72-76). Junior Philip Francis collected a 1-over par 73 and moved up 10 spots into a tie for 50th with a 12-over par 228 (76-79-73), while junior Spencer Fletcher returned for the final round after missing the second day and shot a 6-over par 78, finishing with an 11-over par 155 (77-78).

The University of California-Berkeley was crowned champions after shooting an even par 864 (286-289-289), followed by Stanford (294-281-292) and Washington (294-286-287), who tied for second at 3-over par 867. Oregon fell to 12th with a 34-over par 898 (295-298-305). Andrew Yun of Stanford won the individual title at 12-under par 204 (70-69-65).

ASU is off until the 2011 spring season tees off Feb. 2 at the Hilo Big Island Invitational in Kona, Hawaii.
