Quite the backup plan, Arizona State downs UCLA

The Sun Devils (5-6) honored their senior class this afternoon with an impressive 55-34 win over the UCLA Bruins (4-7) at Sun Devil Stadium. Quarterback Brock Osweiler was 27-36, throwing for 380 yards and four touchdowns. Running back Cameron Marshall rushed for 148 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Senior Kerry Taylor caught six passes for 68 yards.

After a slow start in which the Sun Devils gave up 17 points without a score, ASU fought back to win in convincing fashion by 21 points. They were able to amass 595 yards of total offense on just over 27 minutes of possession. ASU had two plays of over 50 plus yards and were 6-6 in the red zone.

The Bruins drove 79 yards on their opening drive to score. Quarterback Richar Brehaut rushed twelve yards for the touchdown. A 55 yard rush by running back Johna Franklin brought the Bruins into the red zone setting up the touchdown.

The first two drives by the Sun Devils stalled only producing one first down. On their second drive quarterback Steven Threet suffered a head injury on an attempt to scramble for the first down, he was replaced on the following drive by Brock Osweiler.

A blocked punt by Dalto Hilliard gave the Bruins great field possession on ASU's 28 yard line but a solid defensive stand forced the field goal. UCLA kicker Kai Forbath made a 40-yard field goal to put the Bruins up 10-0.

The following UCLA drive went 46 yards in one play for the touchdown. A fumbled backwards pass to Deantre Lewis on 4th and 1was recovered by the Bruins on the 50 yards and returned four yards. Richar Brehaut connected with Randal carroll for the score. The Bruins led 17-0.

The Sun Devils finally showed some offensive productivity with a four play, 78-yard drive over 1:17. Brock Osweiler's 70 yard pass to Deantre Lewis brought ASU down to the 8 yard line setting up a 5-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Pflugrad. Kicker Thomas Weber tacked on the extra point making it 17-7.

The following ASU drive saw another touchdown pass from Brock Osweiler after a three play, 51-yard drive in 39 seconds. Osweiler hit Mike Willie for the 32 yard touchdown pass.

Late in the second quarter, Osweiler put up his third passing touchdown of the game. Over 11 plays the Sun Devils went 63 yards to finish the drive with a 7-yard pass to Gerell Robinson. The Devils led 21-17.

The Sun Devil defense stepped up in the second quarter holding the Bruins to only a 37 yard field goal by Kai Forbath. ASU led 21-20 at halftime.

Thomas Weber finished the opening drive of the first half with a 21 yard field goal. Brock Osweiler hit T.J. Simpson for a 78-yard pass in the first play of the half and ASU was able to put three on the board.

UCLA drove 70 yards on their first drive of the second half down to the ASU one yard line but Lawrence Guy and Gerald Munns held the line on 4th and 1 to force the turnover on downs. Taking the ball on the one, the Sun Devils drove 99 yards in 3 plays. Cameron Marshall broke through the line to go 71 yards for the touchdown. ASU led 31-20.

The Bruins answered with a 71 yard drive finished with a 21 yard pass to Nelson Rosario. The lead was brought within four, but the following kickoff was returned 99 yards by Jamal Miles for the touchdown putting the Sun Devils up 38-27. The Sun Devils recorded 206 yards off five kickoff returns.

Max Tabach intercepted a pass from Richar Brehaut giving ASU the ball on the UCLA 27 yard line to finish off the third quarter. Aaron Pflugrad capitalized from the interception catching a 15 yard pass from Osweiler putting ASU up 45-27.

Impressive defense held the Bruins to a three and out and, on their following drive, holding them on 4th and 5.The offense capitalized with a 37 yard field goal from Weber and later a 15 yard touchdown run by Osweiler to cap off an 82-yard drive. ASU was up 55-27 with just under four minutes left in the game.

UCLA was able to put another touchdown up on the board with a 4 yard pass to Joseph Fauria but it was not enough for the Bruins as the Sun Devils recorded their fifth win of the season.

Starting quarterback Steven Threet suffered a concussion in the first quarter from a sack by UCLA linebacker Sean Westgate. He did not return to the game. Second string quarterback Brock Osweiler took Threet's place in an impressive performance. Osweiler's efficient control of the offense allowed the Sun Devils to put up the most points of the 2010-2011season to this point.

The Sun Devils honored their 13 seniors this afternoon. The 2010 seniors are: S Max Tabach, WR Brandon Smith, S Mike Callaghan, P Trevor Hankins, CB LeQuan Lewis, WR Kerry Taylor, LB Gerald Munns, K Thomas Weber, DL Saia Falahola, TE Ryan Skorupka, DL Dean DeLeone, DL Jamarr Robinson and OL Jon Hargis.

Arizona State travels to Tuscan on Thursday, December 2 to take on the rival Arizona Wildcats. The fight for the Territorial Cup will be aired on ESPN Thursday Night Football at 6 p.m.
