The Arizona State University wrestling team competed in their first individual tournament action of the season on Saturday as 21 Sun Devils took on numerous teams from all over California and Arizona in the 2010 Fullerton Open that was held at Titan Gym in Fullerton, Calif. More than half of the Sun Devils competing in uniform (7-of-13) placed among the Top 6 in their weight classes, including Eric Starks, who won his first collegiate tournament by capturing the 174 title.

Starks was not the only finalist on the day as both Ben Ashmore (125) and Jake Meredith (184) reached the finals and eventually placed second overall. Other place winners for the Sun Devils included Kalin Goodsite, who was fifth at 141; Luke Ashmore, who was fourth at 149; Te Edwards, who was third at 165 and Michael Hawkins, who was sixth at heavyweight. Two members of the program that competed unattached from the team also placed as Bobby Bowman finished third overall at 174 and Joel Smith was sixth at 149.

In the final at 174, Starks had to battle back from an early deficit against Victor Carazo (Grand Canyon) and eventually tied the score at 6-6 to force overtime. In the extra minute of action, Starks shot in low to hook an ankle before moving his way up to secure both legs and the takedown to score two points and win the match while also avenging a 3-1 loss to Carazo in a dual last week in Phoenix. On the day, Starks defeated teammate Bowman (6-2) before defeating Ernie Vasheresse (San Francisco State), 10-4, and Steve Vazquez (CS Fullerton), 8-1, to reach the final.

Ashmore, who competed at 133 against Oklahoma on Thursday, dropped down to 125 for the tournament and made an impressive run as he won his first four matches to reach the final. After an 8-0 major decision in the first round and a pin at 2:27 in the second, Ashmore won close matches of 6-3 in the quarterfinal before upsetting No. 15 Andre Gonzalez (CS Fullerton), 3-1, in the semifinal. In the final, Ashmore looked to drop his second ranked foe of the tournament, but came up just short as No. 13 Ryan Mango (Stanford) won the title by a 3-2 score.

Meredith also took second as he won his first three matches of the day, including a win by fall in 1:00 of his first match before winning closer matches of 3-1 over Spence Patrick (Stanford) in the quarterfinal and 5-0 over Ryan Becerra (Grand Canyon) in the semifinal. In the final, however, Meredith fell behind early and tried to come back, but it was not enough as Todd Noel won the title, 5-3.

Two others reached the third place match, including Te Edwards at 165 and Luke Ashmore at 149. Edwards won his first two matches of the tournament before falling to eventual champion Ryan Desroches (Cal Poly). Edwards went on to win his next two matches, including a 10-1 major decision in the consolation semifinals before taking third place with a 5-4 win over Trevor Hall (UN-CS Bakersfield). Ashmore lost in the second round before winning his next five matches in a row where he battled for third place, falling to Geoff Doss (Cal Poly), 6-0.

Kalin Goodsite reached the quarterfinals at 141 before falling to No. 12 Juan Archuleta (UN-Purdue), but fought back in the consolation rounds to win twice in a row. After winning a 7-3 decision and a 9-3 decision, Goodsite fell in the consolation semifinal round, 3-2, to Adin Deunas (UN-CS Fullerton), who was once ranked among the Top 15 nationally. Goodsite received fifth place after his foe defaulted out of the tournament due to injury.

The final Sun Devil to place was Michael Hawkins at heavyweight, who went 5-3 to finish sixth. After falling, 2-1, in the second round, Hawkins battled hard to win his next four matches in a row to reach the consolation semifinal, where he fell to No. 18 Kurt Klimek (CS Fullerton), 3-1. He then fell, 5-3, in the fifth place match to another Pac-10 foe, Jim Powers (Cal Poly).

Bowman had an impressive day as well as he came from behind in several matches to finish third overall at 174 pounds with his only loss coming to eventual champion and fellow Sun Devil Starks in the second round. Bowman opened with a win by fall in 31 seconds before dropping his 6-2 decision to Starks. In the consolation rounds, Bowman ripped off six wins in a row, starting with a pair of wins by fall and then a 13-4 major decision. In the consolation quarterfinal, Bowman came from behind to defeat CJ Knowland (Cal Baptist) with a 6-5 score before winning 7-1 over Steve Vazquez (Cal Poly), 7-1. In the medal match, Bowman scored an 8-5 decision over Joey Granata (UN-CS Bakersfield) to finish third overall.

Smith also had a solid run in the tournament as he reached the semifinal, where he fell in a close 4-3 decision to Chris Santana (Cal Baptist). In the match, Smith sustained an injury and withdrew from the tournament, falling to the fifth-place match to take sixth.

Also competing in uniform for the Sun Devils were David Prado (133), Carlos Castro (133), Orlando Jimenez (141), Tai Fukumoto (149), Lucas Mariacher (157) and Emilio Veramontes (165). The seven other unattached team members that took part in the tournament included Dalton Miller (125), Nathan Hoffer (149), Kyle McIntosh (149), Derek Felton (165), Wesely Moore (184), Kevin Radford (184) and David Prieto (197).

On Sunday, Anthony Robles and Bubba Jenkins will compete at the 45th NWCA All-Star Classic presented by The Marines, an exhibition event featuring of the top-ranked individuals at each weight class. The next action for the team will be in one week when the CSUF Titans travel to Tempe for a 7 p.m. Pac-10 dual inside Wells Fargo Arena.
