Soccer unable to defend itself against Oregon
Despite a 10-4 advantage in shots, the Arizona State women's soccer team saw its winless streak extended to four games (0-3-1) following a 2-0 loss at Oregon on Sunday. The Sun Devils are now 8-6-3 (2-4-1 Pac-10) while Oregon improved to 7-8-3 (3-3-1 Pac-10).
For the second time in as many contests, ASU came out and controlled the action only to find itself behind at the half. On Friday ASU outshot No. 15 Oregon State 7-4 only to give up a goal in the 44th minute of an eventual 1-0 loss to the Beavers. A similar scenario unfolded on Sunday as once again the Sun Devils came out and pressed the attack in the early minutes of the game, taking a pair of shots and drawing a corner kick in the first 3:43 of the game.
The Ducks would take only one shot in the first half, but they made it count when in the seventh minute sophomore midfielder Scout Libke's shot from 30 yards was tucked just below the far right post and over the reach of Sun Devil goalkeeper Alyssa Gillmore to give Oregon a 1-0 lead.
Though aggressive, the Sun Devils were only able to muster a single shot on goal out of the six shots they took in the first half.
ASU would continue to push the attack in the second half as it had periods where it was able to keep the ball on Oregon's side of the field, however was thwarted as it moved closer to Oregon's goal.
The Ducks would end up taking the first three shots of the half. The last of those shots, which came in the 77th minute, put ASU into an even bigger hole as Oregon senior midfielder Mercedes Walters sent her shot from 22 yards into the lower left corner of the goal to extend Oregon's lead to 2-0.
Senior midfielder Alexandra Elston led ASU with two shots while redshirt sophomore forward Sierra Cook (2 shots) and freshman forward Devin Marshall each tallied one shot on goal.
The Sun Devils close out the regular season portion of their schedule next weekend when they host USC on Friday at 7 p.m. and UCLA on Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday's contest against UCLA will be Senior Day. In addition the game against UCLA will also be televised live by Fox Sports Arizona.
