Dauntless Drumstix Dash honors co-founder
Put on your sneakers for the 12th annual Dauntless Drumstick Dash at Arizona State University’s Polytechnic campus, Nov. 20. This year the Dash will recognize the late Walter Carter, a retired police aide who served at the Polytechnic campus and co-founder of the Dash, by naming it the Walter Carter Memorial Run.
The run is a major fund-raiser for a scholarship endowment fund, which is also being renamed in Carter’s honor as the Walter Carter Memorial Staff Council Scholarship.
The endowment fund provides scholarships annually to students of ASU's Polytechnic campus in need of financial assistance. The goal each year is to increase the endowment fund so that more scholarships may be awarded to those in need.
The Dash is a 5K road race, two mile fun walk, and a three-quarter mile and a 1½ mile kids' fun run held at ASU's Polytechnic campus located at Power and Williams Field roads in East Mesa. All are welcome to participate and there is something for every age group.
The kids’ fun runs for children ages 5 to 12 are scheduled first and their looped course is visible to spectators. All participants in the kids’ run receive medallions at the end of their run. Supervised activities have been planned for the children to participate in after the kids’ runs so their parents can run/walk in the event.
Overall male and female winners of the 5K run will receive a plaque and prizes will be given to male and female age group 5K winners. All participants will receive a t-shirt, Indian fry bread, water and Gatorade.
ASU student organizations are encouraged to participate. The organization with the most members involved will get their organization’s name on the Walter Carter perpetual trophy on display at the Polytechnic campus Student Union.
Registration starts at 6:30 a.m. the morning of the Dash, but pre-registration is encouraged. To pre-register and view start times visit the Dash Web site at http://www.poly.asu.edu/dash/.
