Selecting a study spot

September 30, 2010

Throughout the semester, a select group of ASU freshmen will be blogging about their first year as Sun Devils. In the same way that graduation serves as a milestone marker for both students and the university, the freshman year experience is one of significant formation as it sets the foundation for academic excellence.

After a quick trip to San Diego, it was rush week for Alpha Kappa Psi, a well-known business fraternity. I didn’t think that I would get a bid, considering I wasn’t a business major, but I am now a pledge and loving it! We had our first barbecue and class meeing and also played "Capture the Flag" against the actives (which we lost, but still had fun). Now we have to conduct numerous interviews of the actives, while getting donations for Arizona Association for Foster & Adoptive Parents (AZAFAP). Being involved in Greek life has helped me make friends who are like-minded and will help me through anything.

I am focused on balancing campus activities with studying for my classes. I have a lot of homework, especially in chemistry and the Human Event. Chemistry is pretty interesting because I'm learning about reactions and balancing equations. As for the Human Event, I have to read a new book and write two pages of notes for discussion each week. It's time consuming, but it's worth it! So far it's my favorite class. We discuss and state our own opinions about the readings that we do every week. My professor, Mark Montesano, is awesome and really has helped me think critically about the topic at hand.

When I am not in class or involved in Greek life activities, I am either studying or writing papers. Since it's getting cooler at night, I've chosen to sit outside on the Barrett grounds to study. It is really quiet and relaxing so it helps me focus on my assignments. During the day, I usually go to Hayden Library. It is such a huge library so there's room for everyone to be spaced out and not be bothered with distractions. It especially helps when you need to get sources for a paper (professors prefer printed sources as opposed to website sources). A month into my freshman year and I am loving it so far.
