Analyzing ant activity

Posted: Aug 26, 2010 | 0 min 54 sec

To track patterns of behavior in colonies of the seed harvester ant, Pogonomyrmex californicus, doctoral student James Waters and ASU undergraduates Ioulia Bespalova and Elana Niren paint-marked individual ants with unique color codes and then analyzed video-recordings of colony activity.

In this montage of video clips, you can see individual workers tending to larvae and the queen, foraging, and interacting with each other. These interaction patterns were affected by colony size and correlated with changes in colony energetics.
