Cronkite Speaker Series features prominent media players

August 26, 2010

A Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist, two TV news anchors, a national branding expert, three foreign journalists and the executive vice president of the Americas region for Yahoo! are among the prominent media professionals who will speak Monday evenings this fall at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

The events are part of the school’s Must See Mondays speaker series, which kicks off Aug. 30 with former CNN anchor and Cronkite Professor of Journalism Aaron Brown.

Later in the semester, speakers will include Cronkite Professor Leonard Downie Jr., former executive editor of The Washington Post; Hilary Schneider, executive vice president of the Americas region for Yahoo!; Dan Schawbel, best-selling author and “millennial branding” expert; 12 News anchors Lin Sue Cooney and Mark Curtis; Michel du Cille, Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer of The Washington Post; and John Corrigan, business editor of the Los Angeles Times.

The visiting speakers will discuss topics such as covering elections and immigration, providing local content in a digital world, reporting relevant business stories, global perspectives on freedom of speech, amassing online audiences and building personal brands.

The series, entering its third year, will be held 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. each Monday in the school’s First Amendment Forum on Arizona State University’s downtown Phoenix campus. It is free and open to the public.

“The Must See Monday speaker series offers students, media professionals and members of the public a unique opportunity to hear from global leaders in journalism, with a special emphasis on the digital future of news,” said Cronkite Dean Christopher Callahan.

In addition to Must See Mondays, the school will host Cronkite Night at the Movies most Wednesday evenings throughout the semester.

Movies that depict journalism, including “Walter Cronkite: Witness to History,” “All the President’s Men” and “Shattered Glass,” will be shown on the school’s 16-by-9-foot high-definition big screen in the First Amendment Forum. The films will be introduced by Cronkite professors with expertise in the topics.

Students and the public also will be able to discuss the events and their impressions on Cronkite Conversations, the school’s blog site.
