Box Score

Brady Rodgers threw eight shutout innings to lead the No. 2 Arizona State University baseball team to a 13-1 win over Arizona on Tuesday at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. A crowd of 4,033 saw the Sun Devils improve to 39-5 overall with the victory in the non-conference match-up.

Rodgers allowed just two hits and did not walk a batter while striking out seven to earn the win and improve to 3-2 on the season. After allowing a single to the first batter of the game, he retired 21 straight Wildcat hitters before Cole Frenzel singled in the eighth. Jordan Swagerty pitched the ninth, striking out the side while allowing an unearned run.

Zack MacPhee and Deven Marrero had two hits and two RBI apiece in the win, while Kole Calhoun, Raoul Torrez and Austin Barnes also drove in two runs each.

The game was scoreless until the fourth, when Calhoun and Riccio Torrez drew consecutive walks to lead off the inning and, two batters later, Raoul Torrez brought both of them in with a double to center. He then scored on a sacrifice fly by Marrero, and Andrew Aplin scored later in the inning on an error to make it 4-0.

ASU then took command in the sixth, scoring seven runs in the inning. Marrero had an RBI single, Aplin drove in a run with a groundout and Marrero then scored on a wild pitch to put the Sun Devils on top 7-0. MacPhee then had a two-run double, and Calhoun capped off the inning with a two-run homer to right center. It was his team-leading ninth home run of the season.

Barnes had a two-run single in the seventh to make the score 13-0, and Arizona scored its only run on an error by Swagerty in the ninth.

The Sun Devils now have the rest of the week off and then will return to action on May 10, when they begin a two-game series with BYU. First pitch for both games is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
