New College alum sets 5k event for Tia Foundation

February 19, 2010

A 5k run/walk and family fun run is being presented by Arizona State University alum Laura Libman and her non-profit healthcare-focused Tia Foundation. The March 27 fund-raising event will take place at Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale.

Libman graduated from ASU’s New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences in 2003 with a B.A. in English, then earned her MBA at Thunderbird in 2005. She is the founder of Tia, using her academic pedigree to make a difference in healthcare issues in rural Mexico. The Tia Foundation 5k Run/Walk for Health is designed to further the organization’s efforts south the border.

“This event, which promotes healthy family behaviors, ties in perfectly with Tia’s mission to increase access to healthcare and health information in Mexico,” says Libman, who spent much of her childhood travelling through and vacationing in rural Mexico. “Our goal, to raise $10,000, translates into health services provided for 3,000 villagers.”

The 5k run/walk will begin at 9 a.m. on the Thunderbird rugby field. The family fun run begins at 10 a.m., and the day includes a barbecue from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Through March 1, the entry fee is $20 per runner. The fee increases to $25 through March 20 when it increases to $30 per runner/walker. The post-run/walk BBQ is $5. ASU and Thunderbird students will receive a $5 run/walk discount, and the first 25 run/walk entrants will receive a free ticket for the BBQ.

“This is a fun and healthy way to support a program that is successfully addressing healthcare issues in villages that lack the proper care information or facilities,” says Libman. “Tia has taken a unique and effective approach in rural Mexico, and the success is sustainable; it breeds opportunities in other areas such as social services, education and government.

“We’re looking forward to this event, because the funds we raise will help us do even bigger things in communities that need assistance.”
