Stir up some summertime creativity

February 16, 2010

It’s not too early to plan your summer getaway in community arts and design classes available to aspiring artists of all ages in the ASU Herberger Institute Community School for Design and the Arts. Enrollment for summer sessions now is underway for everyone – from serious high school arts students to adults and kids, preschool to teen. Private instruction also is available for all ages and in all areas.

There are many new studio classes and summertime camps to answer your creative callings. Summer camps for kids, ages 4–14, include hands-on visual art camps in drawing, painting and sculpture. Digital photography, digital video and digital animation are available for the 7–14-year-old students who want to go beyond the studio.

Students interested in music and dance can select from a wide variety of dance styles, including hip-hop, ballet and creative movement, and New York, New York for students who want to experience the Broadway stage. Music camps start with the littlest musicians, ages 4–6, trying their hands on two popular instruments, the piano and the violin. Older campers can choose from piano, guitar, tribal drum or island drum sessions. The popular FOX® Television show, Glee, inspires our newest addition to summer camps – Show Choir! Enjoy singing in a choir while simultaneously working on your dance moves. For all the future rockers, Jam Session teaches real-life instrumental skills while kids have the time of their lives playing songs by The Beatles, Taylor Swift and The Black Eyed Peas!

Rounding out an inspiring and culturally enriching music experience for aspiring young musicians is the 6th annual Latin Jazz Workshop, under the direction of Michael Kocour, director of Jazz Studies in the ASU Herberger Institute School of Music, and Dom Moio, fellow School of Music faculty associate. Moio and Kocour join members of the Jazz Studies faculty in this big band and combo workshop that focuses on Latin Jazz or Mambo literature made popular by artists such as Mario Bauza, Machito Grillo, Eddie Palmieri, and Chucho Valdéz. New this year, students can immerse themselves in a full day of jazz by combining Latin Jazz Workshop with the Traditional Jazz Workshop. Ensembles focus on music from the New Orleans-tradition made popular by artists such as Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet and Bix Beiderbecke. Under the direction of Sam Pilafian, School of Music professor, with an instructional staff that includes Jazz Studies faculty members, the Traditional Jazz Workshop provides a fun and exciting entry point for the exploration of the improvisatory arts.
