Need a job? Career Services can help with that
Earning a college degree is an enormous challenge, but sometimes launching a career can be just as daunting for young graduates.
ASU Career Services offers a variety of workshops, career fairs, webinars and assessment tools for students and ASU graduates to help them find their way in the world of work.
The list begins with career assessment tools: The Strong Interest Inventory and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. There is a $35 registration fee for each assessment. The Strong Interest Inventory is recommended for first- and second-year students. It identifies career and major options according to six basic interest scales. The Myers-Briggs is recommended for juniors and seniors who want to identify industries, specific career fields and organizations that are a good fit for their personality.
The following workshops are on the schedule for spring:
• Developing Job Search Strategies: This workshop addresses such strategies as professional networking, time management and highlighting your transferable skills. One-hour sessions are scheduled at 4 p.m., April 8 and 10 a.m., April 14, Student Services Building, room 329.
• How to Find an Internship: Learn how to use a variety of tools, including the Internet, to find an internship. Meets at noon, Feb. 17, Memorial Union’s Union Stage (085); 4 p.m., March 30, Memorial Union Cochise Room (228); noon, April 26, Memorial Union’s Union Stage (085).
• Developing Your Professional Image: Business Etiquette: Learn to handle social settings and office environments with style and grace. One-hour sessions are set for 4:30 p.m., Feb. 24; 1 p.m., April 1; 3 p.m., April 6, all in Student Services Building, room 329.
• Selling Your Skills: Resumes and Cover Letters That Get Results: Learn to identify valuable skills developed from life experiences such as paid and unpaid jobs, class projects, internships and participation in student organizations. One-hour sessions are scheduled for: 4:30 p.m., Feb. 16 and 17; 11:30 a.m., Feb. 19; 1 p.m., Feb. 25; 2 p.m., March 11; 3 p.m., March 23; noon, April 13; 4 p.m., April 26, all in Student Services Building, room 329.
• STAR in the Employment Interview: Learn how to inventory your marketable skills and effectively communicate your qualifications to the interviewer. One-hour sessions are offered at 3 p.m., Feb. 24; 2 p.m., March 1; 3 p.m., March 10; noon, April 15; and 1 p.m., April 30, in Student Services Building, room 329.
• Salary Negotiation: Learn how to communicate your value during the interview process. One-hour sessions are set for 4:30 p.m., March 10 and 4 p.m., April 21, in Student Services Building, room 329.
• Job Fairs:
Feb. 10, 12:30-4 p.m., Memorial Union second floor, Tempe campus.
Feb. 24, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., student Union Cooley Ballroom, Polytechnic campus.
March 23, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., La Sala Ballroom, West campus.
March 24, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Civic Space Park, Downtown Phoenix campus.
• Career Webinars: Offered live, via the Web, for all ASU students and alumni. These cover such topics as “Dynamic Networking,” “The Anti-Monster Job Search,” “Launch Your Career with LinkedIn,” ”Interviewing Skills,” and “Do I Need to Go to Graduate or Professional School?”
Since webinars are live, participants can ask questions and get immediate answers. Occasionally a webinar will have too many interested attendees for the system to accommodate.
