President Crow addresses Haiti aftermath
EDITOR'S NOTE: In this statement issued Jan. 15 to the ASU community, President Michael Crow addresses the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Haiti and how the ASU community can offer their support for the massive relief effort, as well as receive assistance through university services.
This week’s devastating earthquake in Haiti has stunned the world with the scope of its destruction and left the island nation struggling to respond to an unthinkable loss of life and critical infrastructure. As we continue to process developments related to the disaster, the thoughts and condolences of our Sun Devil family go out to all those affected by this extraordinary tragedy. It is during difficult times like these that we must come together to lend support – both for those in distant places and for each other.
As you may know, one of our own students, Christa Brelsford, was working as a volunteer in Haiti and sustained a serious injury during the earthquake. Thankfully, Christa was rescued and is now recovering in a Miami hospital. We have conveyed our collective concern and good wishes for her safe and rapid recovery.
I urge ASU students and employees with ties to Haiti or who are in need of support in the aftermath of the earthquake to contact the Counseling Centers at ASU or Employee Assistance for help. The impact of this event is far-reaching and services are in place to assist those in need.
Many members of our university community have inquired about how they can support the massive global relief efforts related to the earthquake. Your generosity, at any level, to those in need will be deeply appreciated. Below is a list of charitable organizations that are accepting donations to aid the people of Haiti.
ASU will continue to look for ways that it can assist institutionally as specific needs become clearer in the coming days.
