Baseball lands five Student-Athletes On Pac-10 All-Academic Team

Five Arizona State University baseball student-athletes were named to the Pacific-10 Conference All-Academic team, the conference announced Monday. Junior pitcher Mike Leake, sophomore pitcher Seth Blair and sophomore outfielder Andy Workman were all named to the First Team, sophomore outfielder/pitcher Matt Newman was named to the Second Team and junior outfielder Jason Kipnis received honorable mention. ASU's three First Team selections were the most of any school.

Leake (Fallbrook, Calif.), who was named the Academic All-American of the Year last week, earned First Team honors for the second straight season. Leake is a management major with a 3.42 GPA, and he is 15-1 with a 1.23 ERA and 143 strikeouts on the season, winning his second consecutive Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year award last week. Blair (Rock Falls, Ill.), who is majoring in interdisciplinary studies, has a 3.58 GPA. He is 7-2 with a 3.16 ERA and 78 strikeouts. Workman (Chandler, Ariz.) is a finance major with a 3.98 GPA, and he is hitting .292 with seven RBI in 32 games this season.

Newman (Glendale, Ariz.), who is also majoring in interdisciplinary studies, has a 3.37 GPA. He is hitting .310 with seven home runs and 51 RBI while going 2-1 with a 4.59 ERA on the mound. Kipnis (Northbrook, Ill.) leads the team with a .387 batting average, 82 hits, 47 walks, 24 stolen bases and 20 doubles, and he is second with 15 home runs and 68 RBI. He was named Pac-10 Player of the Year last week. Kipnis is a BIS major with a 3.00 GPA.

A student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall GPA and either be a starter or a significant contributor to be eligible for All-Academic selection. True freshman and transfer students are not eligible. This is the 13th consecutive season that Arizona State had had at least two members of the All-Academic Team.
